Save Money on Your Next Souvenir Purchase

I don't like spending a lot of money on something when I can get it for less if I'm patient or do a little research to snag some coupons.  This applies to big home purchases, clothing for my daughter and also Disneyland or Walt Disney World souvenir purchases.

Before heading out on a trip to the parks, I look at Disneystore.com and look at the Disney Parks Product.  I check out what's available online and what I'm interested in.  If it's available online, I know I can wait for a sale, coupon and free shipping.  Disneystore.com frequently sends out 20-25% off Disney Parks Products (it helps to be on their email list to get notified).

Then once I'm at the park, I'll only purchase items that I didn't see online.  I feel better doing this because then I know I got something special at the park and for the rest of the items, I didn't pay full price.

How do you save money on park souvenirs?

The Incredible Mr. Limpet in Ariel's Undersea Adventure

As I was enjoying Ariel's Undersea Adventure at California Adventure, I noticed a fish that just didn't belong.

In the Under the Sea scene, I found the Incredible Mr. Limpet!  This is the fish that Don Knotts played in the movie; one that I watched many times over as a kid.

Photographer in Training

I'm a fan of letting kids get behind the camera.  It's always a pleasure to see what inspires them to take a picture.

I've been working with my 4-year old daughter on her photo-taking skills and wanted to share some of the photos she took at Walt Disney World.

Ride Photos

Welcome to those of you joining me from Can Do It Mom AKA Mouse Fan Diane and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 3rd stop on our Magical Blogorail.

October Topic: What I haven't done at Disney but have always wanted to do

One of the things I'd like to do at Disneyland is scheme up a ride photo theme. You know when you ride Space Mountain and you have the same terrified look on your face? Or you have no expression whatsoever? Why not replace that look with a funny pose, expression or work with someone else to do a "scene".

I've seen some really fun themes on Splash Mountain. Check out these kids who brought their breakfast with them. Genius!

You can also find more fun Splash Mountain photos here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/donnad/the-best-staged-splash-mountain-photos  There's even one where a guy got his friends to hold signs that say "Will you marry me" and the girl is sitting in the front of the log with no clue what's going on behind her!  It's pretty clever (hope she said yes!).

I came close this past summer on Splash Mountain. My husband, sister-in-law and I decided we'd pretend to be on our cell phones while we dropped down the mountain. We planned to alternate our leaning so we'd be sure that our faces were seen in the photo. Unfortunately, this dude got in the way. RUDE! Next time, I'm sitting in the front of the log!

Ok, so back to my plan. In order to pull this off, I need a partner in crime and some kind of "theme" for all the photos. Basically, I'd identify all the rides that take your picture and pose the same way each time. Then I can build a library of funny ride photos.

Here are the attractions at Disneyland and California Adventure that take your picture:

Space Mountain
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters
Splash Mountain

California Adventure
California Screamin
Tower of Terror
Radiator Spring Racers

Thank you for joining me today. Your next stop on the Magical Blogorail Loop is Disney in Our Blood.

Kali River Rapids at WDW: 38" Fun!

One of the attractions I was looking forward to most at Walt Disney World is the Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom.

Sure, it's just like the Grizzly River Run at California Adventure but there's one key difference which makes me favor the Kali River Rapids: It has a shorter height requirement.

My daughter is now 4 years old but she's on the short side.  Instead of being at least 40" like her friends and cousins at that age, she's only 37.5" without shoes.  She's petite like I was as a kid, so I know she'll catch up eventually especially since my husband is so tall.  But it means that she isn't tall enough for most of the "big kid rides" at the park which typically has a 40" or more height requirement.

Earlier this year, she had a meltdown at Radiator Spring Racer at California Adventure when she learned she was too short to ride.  She was devastated like I'd never seen before but I used this as a goal-setting opportunity to get her to eat more vegetables and drink more milk.  Since then, she's been eating more vegetables and drinking more milk and telling us that she's "growing big to go on McQueen"!

The Kali River Rapids has a 38" height requirement.  This is a big difference compared to the Grizzly River Run which has a 42" height requirement.

Knowing this, I purchased some Skechers shoes that had a small boost to make the half inch difference and make sure that she'd be able to ride it.  And it worked!  She was tall enough to ride and, boy, was she excited!  For riders that just make the 38" mark, Disney alters their seat to bring down a safety bar.

Yellow child safety bar.  Before getting wet.
I wish they had this seating arrangement at California Adventure since Anaheim is our "home park" and have been missing out on the fun due to the height requirement.

She LOVED the Kali River Rapids and ended up being SOAKED from it.  She and I had the (un)fortunate seating where we were the only two that cover drenched in water head to toe.  But it was good fun especially since the weather was SO hot!

Even though I personally enjoy the Grizzly River Run because it's a longer attraction than the Kali River Rapids and has a longer water fall, I really enjoyed riding WDW's version with my daughter.

The "After" picture.  Soaked head to toe!

October 2012: Monthly Disneyland Photo Scavenger Hunt List

The October Scavenger Hunt list is here!

This month's hunt has a snap shot of the item you're tasked to find in each land. Once you find it, snap a photo with it as proof that you found it.  Don't forget to click the image to enlarge and print.

Need to find the rules to the Photo Scavenger Hunt? Visit the tab at the top of this blog for a printable Rules page.

Print out your list and go hunting for the items on your next Disneyland/California Adventure visit. If you’re stuck on something, let me know and I’ll be happy to provide a clue.

Good luck and have fun!
